Empordà wetlands park
The Aiguamolls de l’Empordà are one of the main wetlands in Catalonia, along with the Ebro and Llobregat deltas.
It is located in the high Empordà plain, between the mouths of the rivers Fluvià and Muga and within a space defined by the current rivers, the old mouths of rivers and canalization systems and irrigation ditches of the different crops that have historically been creating in this place, so rich in fresh water.
The Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park was created on October 28, 1983 by law 23/1983 on the declaration of natural places of national interest and the integral zoological and botanical reserves of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà.
In addition to the protection figure of the Natural Park, it has the Integral Natural Reserves (maximum level of protection in Catalan legislation) of the Coastal Cans, Lakes and Caramany Island.
